Review: Swiss Army Brat - Toxic Shock Syndrome



By now I hope everyone has got to see SAB play live, and if you haven’t yet, hellfire, you need to. Now on to their first release. I’m going to tell you all right now, outright, that if you plan on putting out any new punk / metal /rock 'n' roll all original local music this year, sorry, it’s too late, this is the best album of the year. The song writing is tight, the harmonies are perfect, the musicianship, the production (by Michael Bret Gore) is outstanding. Swiss Army Brat have unleashed an incredible album that will surprise you, and make you happy. From the opening rocker “You, You, You” to the double-whammy closers of “Kill” and “No Shit,” this is THE release of the year. And the CD comes with a surprise that throws the middle finger and a wink at the same time. Hellalujah! -Alabama Sharp

    Earlier this year, Guntersville, AL band The Devil's Got A Hold On Me played a show at the Glass Onion in Gadsden. I'd seen them play several times and was excited to see them tear up my local vinyl fix. Though the crowd was minimal (welcome to Gadsden!), the trio gave us their all. At least the cool people showed up. Per usual, Keith's guitar was loud and nasty and dirty and effortless. Brad killed on drums, pounding the beat with a sufficient prowess and an excess of violence. Chris Lee 6/29/80 - 7/23/16

    Chris Lee has passed away. Unless you knew him, I don't know if I can stress just how significant he was. If you did know him, you're heartbroken like me and you don't need anyone to tell you. But I have to write this.     Chris was the most recent singer of the long-running Huntsville Alabama metal band Envain and even before that had done his share of kicking ass with other bands for years. He was a thoughtful, intelligent man who threw all boundaries away the second he took the stage or barroom floor. He embodied the D.I.Y. punk rock aesthetic. He would sport patches and even tattoos of his favorite local bands. He loved them. When the singer of The Devil's Got A Hold On Me, Nate Baugh, passed away, and the band made the hard decision to turn an already-booked show into a tribute, Chris didn't hesitate to step up and sing. Live Review: Swiss Army Brat

Live at Sidetracks     Swiss Army Brat has been playing a TON of shows in and around the Huntsville area lately, and I can see why they keep so busy…. it’s because THEY FUCKIN' KICK ASS! The region is known for having bands that push the limits of power, of taste. Let’s just say Hville and their regularly visiting neighbors have a reputation. But what is often left out of that narrative are all the women that rock just as hard as, or even harder than the boys. S.A.B. is a prime example. Snotty, angry, funny, take-no-shit, LOUD. I first saw them playing GAD! Fest 2 at Sidetracks Music Hall late last year. They were the one band on the bill with which I was kinda unfamiliar, but Salina Brilla knows how to book a brilliant show. Who was I to question it? Glad I didn't, because Swiss Army Brat KILLED. Since then, my own band was asked to share a bill with them, and we jumped at the chance. And again they did not disappoint. In fact, I think they were even better than at GAD!...
