GAD! Zine

     It's been since June of last year that we last posted an article to this site. Long ass time, considering this is supposed to not only accentuate what we do with the GAD! Zine, but also give so much more. And often. OOPS.     For anyone else, who isn't crippled by depression or the actual disease, a pandemic-induced shutdown might be a golden opportunity to create. Or at least post a lotta shit online. Well, somehow, I ended up at work more. Ate into my "play time". When I'm not at work, I try to spend more time with my family. Besides that, my motivation has been totally shot. Not the motivation to create, but to be involved with "the scene(s), maaaan".      I have so many dear friends in the community, but we all land on so many different perspectives. I can put mild political differences aside (not all artists are great at world views or understanding the world in general), but some, thankfully not many, got caught up in conspiracies.... a...

Joey Image, the legendary punk rock drummer who performed on some the Misfits' most classic songs, has passed away. I personally never met him, but had a brief correspondence on social media. A few years back, I sent a SASE for a "Joey Image Trio" button, but when I got the envelope back, the button had either been snatched by a very cool but unscrupulous postal worker or just busted through the paper and into the ether. I was excited just to have Joey's autograph on the envelope! He immediately contacted me when he heard and hooked me up with 2 buttons. Some good old-school punk mail right there! When I'd heard that he was sick, I wanted to get the word out about his Go-Fund-Me page. I figured it'd be good to feature it in our zine. GAD! is very much a part of the Huntsville, AL scene, home of Cancerslug and Alex Story (who also happens to sing for Doyle), not to mention a ton of other horror-punk/death-rock bands like the Casket Kids and the Go-Go Killers, s...

We've been fans of Jonny & the Black Frames for years. They've been super supportive of the zine as well. So it's kinda insane that we haven't done a proper interview with the boys. TODAY WE FIX THIS!! interview by Harmless GAD!: Who the hell are Jonny & the Black Frames and where do you come from? J&tBF : Jonny and Chad met in Vegas in ‘62 during a backroom poker game at the Sands. Dean Martin introduced us right before Chad dropped a full house on Sinatra and got us kicked out. The rest of the night was a blur of booze and showgirls. J was hired muscle for the mob in those days, but he made one too many enemies and somehow ended up in the back of our Cadillac as we all skipped town.     The internet is ripe with media posts, which are usually plastered with a cute little robot drawn, assumedly drawn by one of their members. They have been playing shows all over Alabama. So with the current level of buzz, I decided to check out for myself if they are just a minor threat, or in fact, a mighty menace.     Their first release is titled, “MOTHMAN’S FIRST VICTIM”, and it is a live performance that shoots a blistering flurry of arrows into one’s ears. I am immediately reminded of the time I first discovered Bomb The Music Industry!, when I was supposed to be writing a paper on the history of photography in high school. This is definitely a band that I cannot wait to see live. The energy from the band and the crowd are massively present in the recording.     It's been months and months and months since we've last posted to this site. Since then, our address has changed and our excitement is renewed!! The two may or may not have anything to do with each other. A lot of stuff has happened since then (like a killer pandemic) which has no doubt kept us busy. In spite of that, like direct SPITE, we're trying to make a comeback. Maybe even excel beyond our original vision. The GADcast Radio Show has continued and so has the physical zine (workin' on issue 24 now!). The GADcast Podcast is still a thing, but there's been countless delays. We plan to continue all three and improve them. We are regular folks trying to squeeze in time to do these projects and many others. We do it outta love (with a fragrant hint of obsession) and we're gonna try to do even more. We'll see how it goes. These are busy/scary/trying times.     On August 10 th , two years to the day that I finally got to meet Chuck Mosley (Faith No More/Bad Brains/Cement/Indoria/VUA) in person at Maggie Meyer's Irish Pub in Huntsville, AL, I received my copy of Primitive Race’s Cranial Matter in the mail. Such coincidences give me hope and kinda make me think that there might be some vague plan or consciousness behind the curtain of the universe. Cranial Matter is a remix album of tunes taken from Primitive Race’s second full-length, Soul Pretender, which featured Chuck on vocal duty. Soul Pretender was released to much critical acclaim (it was my album of the year), but Chuck passed away literally days after its release. It still stands as a landmark in his career. Now Chris Kniker and company have brilliantly pulled off an excellent tribute by creating a remix album that stands on its own from its processor, even with a couple of tunes repeated.     Joshua Dodd is the  mastermind behind   this 5  song debut EP that  aims to  bring the  thunder and the  power and  the head shakin, hair swingin, dick slingin,  to  rawk your roll. "Damnation Boogie" will  get  you up and going, "No Remorse" will get you  to smashing.   There’s a new deputy in town looking  to be  the new  sheriff.
