Review: Genki Genki Panic - More Subhuman Than Subhuman (single)

Image
New music from GGP is always exciting. I’ve loved this band for a long time so I was a little surprised at this hardcore tune. It’s a departure from the Dungeon themed surf tunes I’ve grown so attached to. Hardcore isn’t really my jam, but Chris Moore’s guitar genius comes through and somehow makes everything feel unmistakably his. It’s not just another hardcore tune. Chris doesn’t make just another anything. He’s always innovating and his guitars are always very thoughtful. The guitar on this song subtly reminds me of one of those vintage ghosts on a string. You know like “wooooweeeeeooooo.” Anyway, fun new jam! Also, they have a show with Nekrogoblikon soon! It’ll probably already have happened when you’re reading this. -Dakota Gilliland Genki Genki Panic on Bandcamp!

Review: Phantom Eye - LIVE (EP)

Up until very recently, Phantom Eye has mostly existed as a solo studio endeavor. For the uninitiated, Phantom Eye is Jesse Norris ' ( Lighthouse , ex- TOWU , Tiger Helicide ) solo project. Each release up until this point has had its own sound and personality. In a way, that holds true with this live EP as well.     Much of the material here is grabbed from early Phantom Eye, which is very post-punky. I've said something to this effect in an early review of the project, but the music reminds me a lot of Joy Division and The Cure 's early (but not that early) material. And I mean this as a massive compliment! The lyrics are deeply personal and it's felt through Jesse's distinctive vocal recitations and wails.     The live band here sounds BIG and more organic than the more idiosyncratic studio releases. The bass throbs with the frantic percussion. The guitars and synths sing and pull at each other. I'd say as far as my personal preference, the studio...

Review: Notjaypeg - No War But Class War! (EP)

Jay Hyde (pronounced "Jihad" if you're an angry redneck) is a heart-on-his-sleeve-if-he-didn't-cut-off-his-sleeves kinda guy who loves punk rock. He's been in several cool local bands over the years (including a couple with yours truly), but this is the first time, with the help of a killer backing band, that he's been able to fully express himself creatively. And I dig it.     What we get here is both kinds of music, punk AND ska-punk! If ya ever heard "Punk Rock Getaway" by Tiger Helicide, a song written, sung, and guitared by Jay, this has some of that energy. But the new music is waaaay tighter, brighter, and a lot more fun! Topics covered include politics, corruption, anxiety: FUCKIN' PUNK RAWK STAPLES!! Danceable. Sing-A-Long-able. We need more. Make it happen!  -Harmless Notjaypeg on Bandcamp! Notjaypeg on Spotify!
